Why Most People Struggle With Practice
One of the most common things I hear in the Studio when I ask the dreaded question about practice is: “I’m sorry, I was just too busy.”
Trust me — I get it. I’ve said the same thing to my singing teacher. But when I started working on my own habits, everything changed. So I want to share what worked for me, in the hope it makes things easier for you, too.
Seven Easy Ways to Build a Daily (or Almost Daily) Routine
My biggest suggestion for making singing practice a habit is to make it as simple and pressure-free as possible:
- Don’t make it a big deal — 20 minutes here or there is perfect.
- Start small — maybe you just sing the first page a couple of times.
- It doesn’t have to be the perfect location — yes, the hammock counts!
- Don’t stress about the time of day — sing while the pasta boils.
- Short bursts add up — 5 minutes in the morning + 20 minutes later is still practice.
- Have an accountability buddy — even messaging me after your practice can help.
- Make it fun — practise with a friend and maybe even try a duet!
If you can do some or all of these, you’ll build a stronger practice routine before you know it. Maybe it’s not daily yet, and that’s okay — Rome wasn’t built in a day. We’re building this beautiful habit slowly and steadily.
